                    4. Uddalakajatakam.
     Kharajina jatila pankadantati idam sattha jetavane viharanto
ekam kuhakam bhikkhum arabbha kathesi.
     So hi niyyanikasasane pabbajitvapi catupaccayatthaya tividham
kuhakavatthum pureti. Athassa agunam pakasenta bhikkhu dhammasabhayam katham
samutthapesum avuso asukonama bhikkhu evarupe niyyanikasasane
pabbajitva kuhakam nissaya jivitam kappetiti. Sattha agantva
kayanuttha bhikkhave etarahi kathaya sannisinnati pucchitva imayanamati
vutte na bhikkhave idanevesa pubbepi kuhakoyevati vatva
atitam ahari
     atite baranasiyam brahmadatte rajjam karente bodhisatto
purohito ahosi pandito byatto. So ekadivasam uyyanakilam
gato ekam abhirupakam ganikam disva patibaddhacitto taya saddhim samvasam
kappesi. Sa tam paticca gabbham labhi gabbhassa patiladdhabhavam
natva tam aha sami gabbho me patitthito jatakale
namam karonti assa kinti namam karomiti. So vannadasiya
kucchismim nibbattatta na sakka kulanamam katunti cintetva bhadde
ayam vataghatarukkho uddalakonama idha patiladdhatta uddalakotissa
namam kareyyasiti vatva angulimuddikam adasi sace dhita hoti
imaya nam poseyyasi sace putto atha nam vayappattam mayham
Dasseyyasiti. Sa aparabhage tam puttam vijayitva uddalakotissa
namam akasi. So vayappatto mataram pucchi amma ko me pitati.
Purohito tatati. Yadi evam vede ugganhissamiti matu hatthato
muddikanca acariyabhaganca gahetva takkasilam gantva disapamokkhassa
acariyassa santike sippam ganhanto ekam tapasaganam disva
imesam santike varam sippam bhavissati tam ugganhissamiti sippalobhena
pabbajitva tesam vattapativattam katva acariya mam tumhakam
jananasippam sikkhapethati aha. Te attano janananiyamena
tam sikkhapesum. Pancannam tapasasatanam ekopi tena atirekapanno
nahosi. Sveva tesam pannaya aggo. Athassa te sannipatitva
acariyatthanam adamsu. Atha ne so aha marisa tumhe
niccam vanamulaphalahara aranne vasatha manussapatham kasma
na gacchathati. Marisa manussanama mahadanam datva anumodanam
karapenti dhammakatham kathapenti panham pucchanti mayam tena
bhayena tattha na gacchamati. Marisa sacepi cakkavattiraja
bhavissati manam gahetva kathanam nama mayham bharo tumhe ma
bhayitthati vatva tehi saddhim carikam caramano anupubbena baranasim
patva rajuyyane vasitva punadivaseyeva sabbehi saddhim dvaragame
bhikkhaya cari. Manussa mahadanam adamsu. Tapasa punadivase
nagaram pavisimsu. Manussa mahadanam adamsu. Uddalakatapaso anumodanam
karoti mangalam vadati panham visajjeti. Manussa pasiditva bahu
Paccaye adamsu. Sakalanagara pandito ganasattha dhammikatapaso
agatoti ranno kathayimsu. Raja kuhim vasatiti pucchitva uyyaneti
sutva sadhu ajja nesam dassanaya gamissamiti aha. Ekopi
puriso gantva raja kira vo passitum agacchatiti uddalakassa
kathesi. So isiganam amantetva marisa kira raja agamissati
issaronama ekadivasam aradhetva yavajivam alam hotiti. Kim
pana katabbam acariyati. So evamaha tumhesu ekacce vaggulivattam
carantu ekacce ukkutikappadhanamanuyunjantu ekacce kantakesu sayika
bhavantu ekacce pancatapam tapantu ekacce udakorohanakammam karontu
ekacce tattha mante sajjhayantuti. Te tatha karimsu. Sayam pana
attha va dasa va pandite panditavadino gahetva manorame adharake
ramaniyam potthakam thapetva antevasikaparivuto supannatte asane
nisidi. Tasmim khane raja purohitam adaya mahantena parivarena
uyyanam gantva te micchatapam carante disva apayabhayehi muttati
pasiditva uddalakassa santikam gantva patisantharam katva ekamantam
nisinno tutthamanaso purohitena saddhim sallapanto pathamam gathamaha
                kharajina jatila pankadanta
                dummakkharupa ye mantam japanti
                kacci nu te manusake ca yoge
                idam vidu parimutta apayati.
     Tattha kharajinati sakhurehi ajinacammehi samannagata.
Pankadantati dantakatthassa akhadanena malaggahitadanta. Dummakkharupati
ananjitakkha amanditarupa lukhasanghatidhara. Manusake ca yogeti
manussehi kattabbaviriye. Idam viduti idam tapacarananca mantajjhananca
jananta. Apayati kacci acariya imehi catuhi apayehi
muttati pucchati.
     Tam sutva purohito ayam raja atthane pasanno tunhibhavitum
na vattatiti cintetva dutiyam gathamaha
                papani kammani kareyya raja
                bahussuto ce na careyya dhammam
                sahassavedopi na tam paticca
                dukkha pamunce caranam apatvati.
     Tattha bahussutoti sace maharaja aham bahussutomhiti pagunavedopi
dasakusaladhammam na careyya tihi dvarehi papaneva kareyya titthantu
tayo veda sahassavedapi samana tam bahusaccam paticca
atthasamapattisankhatam caranam apatva apayadukkhato na mucceyyati.
     Tassa tam vacanam sutva uddalako cintesi raja yatha va
tatha va isiganassa pasidi ayam pana brahmano carantam gonam
dandena paharati vaddhitabhatte kacavaram khipati kathessami tena
saddhinti kathento tatiyam gathamaha
                   Sahassavedopi na tam paticca
                   dukkha pamunce caranam apatva
                   mannami veda aphala bhavanti
                   sasamyamam carananneva saccanti.
     Tattha aphalati tava vade veda ca sesasippani ca aphalani
apajjanti tani kasma ugganhanti silasamyamena saddhim carananneva
ekam saccam apajjatiti.
     Tato purohito gathamaha
                   naheva veda aphala bhavanti
                   sasamyamam carananneva saccam
                   kittinca pappoti adhicca vede
                   santim papunati caranena dantoti.
     Tattha nahevati naham veda aphalati vadami apica kho pana
sasamyamam caranam saccameva sabhavabhutam uttamam tena hi sakka dukkha
muccitum. Santim papunatiti samapattisankhatena caranena danto
hadayasantikaram nibbanam papunatiti.
     Tam sutva uddalako na sakka imina saddhim patipakkhavasena
vaditum puttena vutte sineham akarontonama natthi puttabhavamassa
kathessamiti cintetva pancamam gathamaha
             Bhacca mata pita bandhu    yena jatosvayeva so
             uddalako aham bhoto      sotthiya kulavamsakoti.
     Tattha bhaccati mata ca pita ca sesabandhu ca bharitabbanama
yena pana jato soyeva so hoti attayeva hi attano jayati
ahampi taya uddalarukkhamule jato taya vuttameva namam katam
uddalako aham bhoti.
     So ekamsena uddalako tvanti vutte amati vatva
maya te matu sannanam dinnam tam kuhinti idam brahmanati
muddikam tassahatthe thapesi. Brahmano muddikam sanjanitva
niccayena pana tvam brahmano brahmanadhamme pana pajanasiti
vatva brahmanadhamme pucchanto chattham gathamaha
             katham bho brahmano hoti    katham bhavati kevali
             kathanca parinibbanam         dhammattho kinti vuccatiti.
Uddalako tassa acikkhanto sattamam gathamaha
                   niram katva aggimadaya brahmano
                   aposincam yajam usseti yupam
                   evankaro brahmano hoti khemi
                   dhamme thitam tena amapayimsuti.
     Tattha niram katva aggimadayati nirantaram katva aggim katva
paricarati. Aposincam yajam usseti yupanti abhisekakammam karonto
sammapasam va vacapeyyam va niraggalam va yajanto suvannayupam
Ussapeti. Khemiti khemappatto. Amapayimsuti teneva ca karanena
dhamme thitam kathenti.
     Tam sutva purohito tena kathitam brahmanadhammam garahanto
atthamam gathamaha
             na suddhi secanena atthi     napi kevali brahmano
             na ceva khanti soraccam      napi so parinibbutoti.
     Tattha secanenati tena vuttesu brahmanadhammesu ekam dassetva
sabbam patikkhipati idam vuttam hoti aggissa paricaranena va
udakasecanena va pasughatayannena va suddhinama natthi napi
ettakena brahmano kevalaparipunno hoti na adhivasanakhanti na
silasoraccam napi kilesaparinibbanena parinibbutonama hotiti.
     Tato nam uddalako yadi evam brahmano na hoti atha
katham hotiti pucchanto navamam gathamaha
             katham bho brahmano hoti    katham bhavati kevali
             kathanca parinibbanam         dhammattho kinti vuccatiti.
     Purohitopissa kathento itaram gathamaha
                   akkhettabandhu amamo niraso
                   nilobhapapo bhavalobhakhino
                   evankaro brahmano hoti khemi
                   dhamme thitam tena amapayimsuti.
     Tattha akkhettabandhuti akhetto abandhu khetta vatthu
Gamanigamapariggahena ceva natibandhavamittabandhavasahayabandhavasippabandhava-
pariggahena ca rahito. Amamoti sattasankharesu tanhaditthimamayana
rahito. Nirasoti labhadhanaputtajivitasaya rahito. Nilobhapapoti
papalobhena visamalobhena rahito. Bhavalobhakhinoti khino bhavarago.
     Tato uddalako gathamaha
             khattiya brahmana vessa  sudda candalapukkusa
             sabbeva surata danta      sabbeva parinibbuta
             sabbesam sitabhutanam         atthi seyyova papiyoti.
     Tattha atthi seyyova papiyoti ete khattiyadayo sabbe
soraccadihi samannagata honti evam bhutanam pana etesam ayam
seyyo ayam papiyoti evam hinukkatthata atthi natthiti pucchati.
     Athassa arahattuppattito patthaya hinukkatthatanama natthiti
dassetum brahmano gathamaha
             khattiya brahmana vessa  sudda candalapukkusa
             sabbeva surata danta      sabbeva parinibbuta
             sabbesam sitabhutanam         natthi seyyova papiyoti.
     Atha nam garahanto uddalako gathadvayamaha
             khattiya brahmana vessa  sudda candalapukkusa
             sabbeva surata danta      sabbeva parinibbuta.
             Sabbesam sitabhutanam         natthi seyyova papiyo
             pasattham carasi brahmannam     sotthiyakulavamsatanti.
     Tassattho yadi etehi gunehi samannagatanam viseso natthi eko
ca vanno hoti evam sante tvam ubhato sujatabhavam nasento pasattham
carasi brahmannam candalasamo hoti sotthiyakulavamsatam naseti.
     Atha nam purohito upamaya sannapento gathadvayamaha
             nanarattehi vatthehi      vimanam bhavati chaditam
             na tesam chaya vatthanam     so rago anupajjatha
             evameva manussesu        yada sujjhanti manava
             te sajatim pamuncanti       dhammamannaya subbatati.
     Tattha vimananti geham va mandapo va. Chayati tesam
vatthanam chaya so nanavidho rago vicitto rago na hoti
sabba  chaya ekavannava honti. Evamevati manussesupi
evameva ekacce ananabrahmana akaraneneva catuvannam saddhim
pannapenti esa atthiti ma ganhi yada ariyamaggena iha
sujjhanti tada tehi patividdham nibbanadhammam janitva subbata
silavanto panditapurisa te sajatim muncanti nibbanapattito
patthaya hi jatinama niratthakati.
     Uddalako puna pucchaharitum asakkonto appatibhano nisidi.
Atha nam brahmano rajanam aha sabbe ete maharaja kuhaka
sakalajambudipam kohanneneva nasessanti uddalakam uppabbajetva
purohitam karotha sese uppabbajetva phalakavudhani datva sevake
Karothati. Sadhu acariyati tatha akasi. So rajanam upatthahanto
yathakammam gatoti.
     Sattha imam dhammadesanam aharitva na bhikkhave idaneva
pubbepesa kuhakoyevati vatva jatakam samodhanesi tada uddalako
kuhakabhikkhu ahosi raja anando purohito pana ahamevati.
                   Uddalakajatakam catuttham.
