CHAPTER XXII
ON ILLUMINING *
BRETHREN, there are these four defilers of the assembly.* What four?
Herein, brethren, a sinful brother of evil nature is a defiler of the assembly: a sinful sister of evil nature ... a sinful lay-brother of evil nature ... a sinful lay-sister of evil nature is a defiler of the assembly.
These are the four.
Brethren, there are these four who light up the assembly. What four?
Herein, brethren, there is a brother, virtuous and of goodly nature a sister a lay-brother a lay-sister, virtuous and of goodly nature. These four light up the assembly.
(2) Lures to Hell and Heaven (a).*
Brethren, he who is possessed of four things is reborn in purgatory even as a load is laid down. What four?

Of misconduct by deed, misconduct by word, misconduct by thought and false views.
Verily, brethren, he who is possessed of these four things is reborn in purgatory even as ... down.
Brethren, he who is endowed with four things is reborn in heaven, even as ... with what four? With virtuous conduct by deed, with virtuous conduct by word, with virtuous conduct by thought and with right views.
Verily, brethren, he who is endowed with these four things is reborn in heaven even as ...
